Neurodiversity

Every neurodiverse child experiences the world in their own unique way. In my counselling work, I create a safe, respectful, and sensory-aware space where children can explore their emotions, build confidence, and develop tools that support their wellbeing. My approach is child-centred, strengths-focused, and guided by a deep understanding of how different neurotypes may affect communication, behaviour, and learning.

I work with children who identify with – or have been formally diagnosed with – a range of neurodivergent profiles, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD and ADD)

  • Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia

  • Dyspraxia / Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)

  • Sensory Processing Differences

  • Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) profile

How I Support Neurodiverse Children

  • Emotion-focused support to help children express feelings safely and confidently.

  • Play-based and creative approaches that meet children where they are and support communication beyond words.

  • Sensory-aware practices that consider overstimulation, movement needs, and comfort.

  • Strength-building work that celebrates each child’s interests, abilities, and individuality.

  • Collaboration with parents and caregivers to help create supportive environments at home and school.

Sensory sensitivity and overload

Children experience heightened sensitivity to sounds, lights, or touch. I help them develop coping strategies to manage sensory overload in a way that feels safe and empowering.

Emotional regulation

Children may find it harder to understand or express their emotions. I work with them to develop emotional regulation skills, using approaches like mindfulness, play therapy, or visual aids to help them better communicate their feelings.

Social challenges

Building friendships and navigating social situations can be difficult for neurodivergent young people. I offer support in developing social skills, helping them feel more comfortable in social settings and improving peer relationships.

Anxiety

Children experience heightened anxiety, often linked to changes in routine or difficulty predicting social cues. I provide tools and techniques to manage anxiety and increase flexibility in thinking and behaviour.

Self-esteem and identity

Children can sometimes struggle with low self-esteem, particularly if they feel misunderstood or isolated. I help them build a strong sense of self-worth, encouraging pride in their neurodivergent identity and recognising their unique strengths.

Flexibility

My approach is always flexible, adapting to their specific communication styles, interests, and sensory needs. I use a variety of therapeutic methods that are often more interactive or visual, ensuring the therapy is accessible, engaging, and respectful of their neurodiversity. This might include play-based therapy, sand tray therapy, or social stories, depending on what suits the child best.

Tool Kit

Communication cards and passports help young people express emotions. Sometimes it is difficult to explain how we feel to others, these tools make it easier for your child to communicate.

Whether a child is struggling with anxiety, overwhelm, emotional regulation, social interactions, or simply needs a space where they feel understood, my role is to walk alongside them with patience, curiosity, and respect.
